Appeal letter:

We, the members of Jagannath Organization for Global Awareness (JOGA), URGENTLY appeal you to support the victims of the recent flood in Orissa. While the flood is now subsiding, this flood has been of unprecedented magnitude. Surging waters in Mahanadi have caused several breaches, submerging highly populated areas in many coastal districts. The situation is grim and millions of people are affected by the devastation. The worst affected areas are the districts of Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack. Parts of Anugul, Puri and Jajpur have also suffered from the deluge.

Text Box: A villager holds on to a telephone post while trying to collect floating sticks to be used for cooking, at the Naraj barrage on the Kathjodi river in Cuttack.

JOGA is attempting to provide some help on a war footing to the flood-affected areas. At a JOGA meeting held on September 28, 2008, there was overwhelming support for this cause. We also raised more than $1600.00 from just the few families present at the meeting, out of which $1100 has been sent expeditiously through Joga's volunteers in Orissa to help the cause. There was unanimous agreement that we should try to send the funds directly to the affected areas through many reliable channels known to the JOGA members. This will minimize the overhead, at the same time ensuring that the funds are used urgently and efficiently.

According to the information we have collected, the most needed items are:
Dry ration, medicines, candles, torch & batteries, utensils, tarpaulin, feeding bottles, ropes, bed sheets, clothing, footwear, mosquito nets, stoves, cooking and water storage utensils/buckets. The funds will be used for distribution of such items. Several schools have also suffered damages, and we will identify some schools where the funds can be used to repair the damages.

Text Box: Flood waters from the Daya river enter Balkati village in Khurda district of Orissa following the opening of 40 sluice-gates of the Hirakud dam (~Sep 20, 2008).

We appeal you to contribute in this effort to help the flood victims. Donations to JOGA are tax deductible. Please make your check payable to JOGA, with the reference of “Orissa Flood Relief" and sent to:
