What is mAtrA? A vowel is added to a consonant to give a distinct sound by using a particular symbol and that symbol is called "mAtrA". What is phaLA? A consonant is added to another consonant to give a distinct sound by using a particular symobol, and that symbol is called "phaLA". mAtrA and phaLA symbols appear above a letter, in the sides of a letter or below the letter.
